NORRISTOWN, PA - Sophomore Ben Wendle hit a three-run homerun in the first inning to power Saint Joseph's to an easy 14-1 victory in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. In the nightcap, runs in the seventh and eighth innings propelled La Salle to a come-from-behind 4-3 win. Wendle finished the day with five hits and five RBIs in two games.

Saint Joseph's (6-25, 3-9 Atlantic 10) got off to a flying start in the first game. After a pair of singles, Wendle hit his fourth home run of the season to spot the Hawks a 3-0 lead before the first out was recorded. SJU added three more runs in the frame on a groundout, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single by catcher Phillip Pursino. La Salle got one of the runs back in the top of the second on an RBI single by catcher Mike Dertouzos. Senior Adriano Petrutz singled and scored on a hit by freshman David Valesente to push the lead back to six in the bottom of the fourth.

The Hawks blew the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six runs on just one hit. Three La Salle pitchers combined to walk five SJU batters, while Valesente was also hit by a pitch in the inning. Wendle drove in two more runs with a double to right, capping off a two-hit, five-RBI game.

Freshman lefthander Randall Mower was solid once again on the mound for the Hawks. In six innings, Mower gave up just one run on three hits while striking out four. Sophomore Chris Prescott pitched three scoreless innings to earn a save. La Salle's Kenny Elkind took the loss.

In the second half of the twinbill, La Salle (13-17, 5-7 Atlantic 10) scored two in the top of the second to take an early lead against freshman starter Mark Dolaghan. However, Dolaghan settled down, inducing groundball double plays in each of the next two innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks took a 3-2 lead after an RBI double by freshman Drew Smith scored Wendle, and junior Jeremy Jakubowski reached on a fielding error that allowed Smith and senior Mike Gentile to score unearned runs and put SJU ahead.

Junior Mark Imbo replaced Dolaghan after five, but was not able to hold the lead after a leadoff double by La Salle's T.J. Chism and a fielding error by Valesente allowed the tying run to score in the seventh. The Explorers took the lead for good in the top of the eighth after John Rickards hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Justin Handler. Imbo took the loss, while Dennis Burge recorded the win, and Gerard Breslin notched his sixth save of the year.

Saint Joseph's will return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon, April 18, for a 3:00 game against NJIT at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.
