BRONX, NY - After a two-hour rain delay, Fordham (18-22, 10-5 A-10) jumped on top of Saint Joseph's (15-26, 7-8 A-10) quickly and coasted to an 8-1 victory in Atlantic 10 baseball at Houlihan Park. Jeremy Jakubowski was the lone Hawk with two hits, finishing 2-for-4.
SJU was stifled by Fordham senior starter Craig Tscherednikov, who threw a complete game five-hitter, striking out a career-high nine. Tscherednikov was thrust into a starter's role when 2005 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Cory Riordan went down with an injury on April 7th.
The Rams jumped on Hawk starter Jeff Williams early, scoring twice in the first and four times in the second to take a quick 6-0 lead.
The Hawks managed only two hits off Tscherednikov over the first five innings before finally picking up a run in the sixth. With one out in the Saint Joseph's sixth, Jereme Scott tripled just past the outstretched Keeney down the right field line and then scored on a Mike Gentile single. But Tscherednikov got Matt Godusky to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Fordham almost took a 7-1 lead in the seventh but Scott leapt at the wall to snare a ball as it was heading over the fence.
The Rams tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth as with two outs to give Fordham an 8-1 lead.SJU returns to action at Lehigh on Tuesday.
