TAMPA, FL (03/19/03) -- It's only natural for a homegrown Philly guy spending a few days in Tampa to want to stop by Clearwater and check out the Phillies spring training camp. But when you're the head coach of an NCAA Tournament team, you use your connections to your advantage. Hawk head coach Phil Martelli, along with assistant coach Mark Bass, started Wednesday with a sunrise visit to Jack Russell Stadium to visit with Martelli's good friend, Larry Bowa. The two SJU generals discussed bracketology with the Phils' skipper and wished each other luck with their upcoming season and postseason, respectively. Comcast anchor Neil Hartman, in Tampa filming "Hanging With the Hawks," gave a tour of the complex, which included Martelli making an over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track in right. "People were saying I looked like Willie Mays out there," Martelli quipped. Martelli and Bass also met with Phillies pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, third base coach John Vukovich, and bench coach Gary Varsho during the early morning hours before the Phils departed for one of its longest bus rides of the season. Bowa's squad takes on the Twins in Fort Myers this afternoon. Hawk students win A-10 Shootout Saint Joseph's seniors Chris Haas and Bridget Adams were victorious in last week's Atlantic 10 Shootout in Dayton. After defeating all SJU contestants at the Fieldhouse in late February, Haas and Adams moved to Dayton and advanced to the finals. According to published reports, Haas, a high school teammate of Phil Martelli, Jr. at Saint Joseph's Prep and men's soccer player, was on fire from behind the arc. The two will split the $10,000 prize. Photos courtesy of Greg Carroccio, Sideline Photos. --Kevin Bonner/Sports Media Relations
