PHILADELPHIA (3/23/03) - La Salle (4-8, 3-0 A-10) rallied from an three-run deficit to defeat Saint Joseph's (1-13, 0-3), 9-8, in ten innings and complete an Atlantic 10 baseball series sweep of the Hawks at Hank DeVincent Field. Four different St. Joe's players had two hits apiece. Sparked by a four run fourth inning and a two run seventh, SJU built up an 8-5 advantage.A two-run single by freshman Ryan Stadanlick keyed the fourth for the Crimson and Gray. The Explorers then plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra frame. SJU went quietly in the top of the tenth, but LSU opened the bottom half of the inning with a triple by Eric Ruhland off Hawk reliever Erik Holman. St. Joe's then walked the next two batters to load the bases. The Explorers Mike Essery then smacked a single to drive home the winning run. Some borderline calls helped to spark the La Salle rally and Hawk head coach Jim Ertal and assistant coach Jack Stanczack were both ejected late in the contest. Junior Erik Vardijan started for SJU and gave up seven runs and 12 hits over 7.0 innings. he was releived by Ryan Hoagey in the eighth and Holman (0-3) tossed the ninth and tenth. Former Hawk Scott Gehringer, who transferred to La Salle after last season, had three hits and earned the win in relief for the Explorers. St. Joe's hosts Rider on Tuesday and then plays Drexel in the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium on Wednesday.
