DELAND, FL - Sophomore Adriano Petrutz tossed four solid innings and Saint Joseph's (2-12) trailed by just a pair entering the home-half of the sixth inning, but Stetson (11-5) used an eight-run frame to muscle past the Hawks, 17-3, at a rain-soaked Melching Field.
Offensively, the Crimson and Gray could manage just two hits and one run off Stetson starter Nate Nery (1-0). SJU added a pair of runs late courtesy of five Hatter walks.
It was a 3-1 ballgame entering the bottom of the sixth when Stetson erupted for eight runs off SJU reliever Joel Grimshaw to break the game open. They added four more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth off Don Werner.
Petrutz (1-2) suffered the loss. He went the first four innings, allowing three runs and five hits. He struckout four and walked four.
The Hawks committed seven errors in the game.
SJU is slated to close out its Florida trip against Belmont on Thursday in DeLand.
