HAWK BATS STAY HOT IN 12-2 ROUT OF LEHIGH

LIMEPORT, PA (4/15/03) - Exploding for a season-high 16 hits, the Saint Joseph's baseball team (10-18) rolled over Lehigh (13-17) at Limeport Stadium. Senior Erik Holman struckout seven to earn his first win of the year. Senior John Kokol and sophomore Willie Menke homered for the Hawks. The first six batters of the game reached base and scored for SJU in the top of the first off Lehigh starter Ryan Dodds,allowing SJU to break out to a 6-0 lead. Three walks, a single, a double, and a three-run homer by Menke capped the six-run opening frame. Holman (1-5) took control the rest of the way. He threw nearly 160 pitches, tossing eight scoreless innings to gain his first win of the season. The righthander scattered eight hits and pitched out of jams in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Freshman Pat Santone pitched the ninth for SJU. The contest remained 6-0 until the seventh when SJU plated four more runs to break the game open. Kokol led off the inning with a solo shot to leftfield. Four more singles then allowed SJU to plate three more runs. A single by senior Mike Walls and a double by Kokol followed by a pair of ground balls, allowed SJU to add two more runs in the eighth. Lehigh tallied two runs in the ninth to nix the shutout. Kokol reached base all five times, going 2-2 with three walks, three runs and a round tripper. Menke was 2-5 with two runs and four RBI. The Hawks play at Delaware at 3:00 PM tomorrow.
