BROOKLYN, NY - Fordham (33-18, 17-7 A-10) scored twice in the first and three times in the second inning en route to a 6-0 victory over Saint Joseph's (13-36, 7-14 A-10) in Atlantic 10 baseball at Keyspan Park. Senior Rob Pimpinella and sophomore Mike Gentile each had a couple of hits for the Hawks, senior Al Braun tossed 4.1 innings of relief.
The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first. Fordham extended the lead to 5-0 with a three-run third.
The Hawks threatened in the eighth as Pimpinella and Gentile opened the inning with consecutive singles. One out later, sophomore Adriano Petrutz reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners. But pinch hitter Kevin Walsh struckout to end the inning.
Fordham closed out the scoring in the eighth.
Cory Riordan (10-3) surrendered only four singles over the first seven innings to extend his scoreless innings pitch streak to 23 innings allowing just two base runners to advance to third. Jeff Williams (3-5) suffered the loss for SJU allowing five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Braun held things in check giving up one run on two hits in 4.1 innings of relief fo hold the Rams in check.
The win clinched second place in the East Division for Fordham as well as the number three seed at the Atlantic 10 Tournament which is slated for May 25-28 at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio.
