PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's baseball team aims to show marked improvement both on the field and off under the stewardship of new head coach Fritz Hamburg. After one semester, the Hawks are well on their way to the latter as the team posted a combined grade point average of 3.00 for the fall of 2008.

Of the 35 student-athletes on the squad, 19 of them posted individual GPAs of 3.0 or better. Junior lefthander Doug DiSandro, a marketing major, was named to the Dean's List for his efforts.

"We are extremely pleased with the effort that our student-athletes have put forth academically, Hamburg said. "We constantly impress upon our players the importance of living up to both ends of the term `student-athlete.' To their credit, they have taken that to heart and were rewarded for it in the fall semester. We would especially like to acknowledge the efforts of Janet Greder and her staff in the Office of Academic Services for Athletes."

Saint Joseph's will open the 2009 season on Friday, February 20 as the Hawks head out to San Jose, Calif. for a four-game series with the San Jose State Spartans.
