NEW ZEALAND - Former Saint Joseph's standout Tyrone Barley has signed a contract to play in New Zealand with the Nelson Giants of the NBL (New Zealand Basketball League). Barley is expected to make his debut in the Giants' game on Friday.
The 2004 SJU graduate is best known for his defensive prowess and leadership during last season's run by the Hawks to the perfect regular season and the NCAA Elite Eight. Barley teamed up with Jameer Nelson to become the winningest four-year class in Hawk history with 98 victories.
Barley was honored with the Atlantic 10's Sixth Man Award and was named to the conference's All-Defensive Team.
Barley was attending graduate school at Saint Joseph's this year and was working with the Hawks as a student assistant coach.
"We need to be able to stop the penetration at one end and if Barley can create shots for himself and for our shooters at the other, he will have answered some of our questions," said the Giants' head coach Nenad Vucinic.
Nelson is currently 3-3 on the season and returns to action on Friday against the Canterbury Rams.
