NORRISTOWN, PA - A four-run fifth and a three-run sixth helped Saint Louis (16-12, 5-2 A-10) break open a close game and defeat Saint Joseph's (11-22, 3-4 A-10), 13-3, in Atlantic 10 baseball action at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Sophomore Chris Cashman was a bright spot for SJU going 3-4 at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits.
The Billikens jumped on top of the Hawks quickly scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Jon Guyre led off the game with a single and with one out Johnny Sweeney and Greg Rodgers walked to load the bases. SLU plated the game's first run on a single by Gil Marlowe and made it 2-0 when Casey Moore drove home a run with a fielder's choice.
SJU trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the home half of the third inning. Cashman led off the frame with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adriano Petrutz.
It was almost all Billikens after that as SLU plated 11 unanswered runs to build up a 13-1 lead. They plated a single run in the fourth and sent 10 men to the plate scoring four runs and chasing Hawk starter Bob Unkel in the fifth inning.
Saint Louis added three more runs in the sixth courtesy of a three-run homer by Moore and three in the ninth on pinch hitter Jerry Vickery's bases loaded clearing double.
Saint Louis starter Dave Sever (3-2) was efficient throwing just over 100 pitches to earn the complete game victory. He scattered nine hits and struckout four, while walking three. Unkel (2-3) suffered the loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4.2. He struckout seven and walked four. Joel Grimshaw (3.1) and Justin Trudell combined to pitch the final 4.1 innings.
The two teams will resume their three-game weekend series on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
