PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team is one of three schools nationally selected to participate in a new Coaches vs. Cancer activity, a walk around campus. The "Walk with the Hawks" will take place on Friday, October 19, and serve as the tip-off to Saint Joseph's Midnight Madness event.
All students, fans, families, faculty and staff are invited to join head coach Phil Martelli and his team, along with the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team and coach Cindy Griffin, as they walk around campus one-and-a-half times. Upon completion of the walk, they will proceed into Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse for Midnight Madness.
The walkers will gather at 6:30 p.m. on Gest Lawn and begin the walk at 7 p.m. There is no charge to participate in the event, but the first 500 supporters who make a donation will receive a "Hawk Walk" t-shirt. Food will be available on Gest Lawn with two live bands providing entertainment.
The other teams participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer walk on their campuses are Temple and Syracuse.
Immediately following the walk, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Martelli will hold a signing for his new book "Don't Call Me Coach: A Lesson Plan for Life" in the Fieldhouse lobby. The book will be available for purchase at this time.
Midnight Madness, which begins at 8 p.m., will include contests and promotions; routines by the cheerleaders and dance team; and introductions of the Saint Joseph's men's and women's basketball teams. The event will culminate in scrimmages by both the men's and women's squads.
Midnight Madness is open to all and there is no admission charge.
