PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's head coach Phil Martelli was named one of the "Best of Philly" in Philadelphia Magazine's annual list in the August issue. He was cited for the coaching job he did in 2004-05, when he turned around the slow-starting Hawks and had them in the NIT Championship game, falling just three points and a few seconds short of the title.
Martelli's recognition came under the topics of Media and Sports. Entitled "Second Wind", the magazine stated, "How good a basketball coach is Martelli? After he lost stars Jameer Nelson and Delonte West to the NBA, nobody expected his St. Joe's Hawks, who captured the city's hearts in their thrilling 2003-04 season, to do much this past year. But after the Hawks lost six of their first nine games, they ended up 24-12, with a second-place finish in the NIT (by three points, no less). The entertaining Martelli gets a lot of credit for his comedy; he doesn't get enough for his coaching."
In the 2004 "Best of Philly", the Saint Joseph's Hawk was named the "Best Sports Mascot".
