CAMDEN, N.J. - A three-run eighth inning broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Saint Joseph's baseball team a 9-6 victory over Fordham at Campbell's Field on Friday afternoon. The Hawks won their 12th Atlantic 10 contest of 2010, tying the school record for league wins in a season.

Fordham (16-30 overall, 10-9 Atlantic 10) got a two-out solo home run from Chris Walker to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Rams added to it in the top of the second on a two-out single by Ryan Maghini.

Saint Joseph's (17-22 overall, 12-7 Atlantic 10) equalized in the bottom of the second. David Valesente led off with a single and stole second base. After Ryan McDonald hit by a pitch, Brian Hartsell dropped a single into left field. Fordham's Ryan Lee bobbled it on the pick-up, allowing Valesente to score. Drew Smith then worked a walk to load the bases before a passed ball scored McDonald to tie the game.

The Hawks batted around in the third, scoring three times to go ahead, 5-2. Brett Tiagwad led off with a single and, with one out, Valesente drew a walk and Kevin Taylor was hit by a pitch to load the bases for McDonald, who hit a sharp grounder in the hole at second. The ball glanced off the glove of Nick Martinez into shallow right, scoring Tiagwad and Valesente to put the Hawks on top. After a single by Hartsell re-loaded the bases, Quinn Renner earned a free pass to force in Taylor and up the margin to three.

The Rams got one back in the sixth on a single by Nick Martinez that left second and third with two outs, but Adam Rivera came on in relief of Randy Mower and struck out pinch hitter Michael Taddei to end the threat.

Fordham got within one and almost knotted things up in the top of the seventh as Ryan McCrann singled to right with two outs and runners on first and second. McDonald fell as he tried to field the ball, but recovered in time to throw out Walker trying to score from first for the third out.

Taylor restored the two run advantage with one out in the seventh when he hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the right field wall to make it a 6-4 Hawk lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Rams scored two more two-out runs to tie the game up at six. An RBI single by pinch hitter Ryan David brought Fordham within one before Lee poked a ball through the left side to score Taddei with the tying run.

Smith led off the bottom of the frame with a double into the right field corner and scored when Renner ripped a two-bagger of his own to put SJU back on top. Mike Coleman then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but pitcher Jordan Grangard threw high to first, allowing Coleman to take second and Renner to score. Taylor later reached on a fielder's choice to push a third run across.

Mike Boyland retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his second victory of the season.

The teams will play the second game of the series on Saturday morning. First pitch at Campbell's Field is slated for 11:00 a.m.
