PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph,s sophomores Mike Blahusch and Jason Hessler have been named the Philadelphia Diamond Five Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the area head coaches. Blahusch batted .500 (7-for-14) with three RBI over four games last week, while Hessler struck out ten batters in seven innings of three-hit baseball against Massachusetts on Saturday.
Blahusch hit safely in all four games to push his hitting streak to eight games. He went 2-for-4 against Rider on Wednesday and 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the opener against UMass. He wrapped up the series by going 1-for-3 in each game of a doubleheader on Monday against the Minutemen.
Hessler picked up the only SJU win of the week in a 13-1 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday. He allowed three hits and one earned run in seven innings, while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Hessler is now 4-7 with a 4.85 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 81.2 innings.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, the Diamond Five is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Diamond Five will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday. The first-ever All-Diamond Five team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
