DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Saint Joseph's baseball team (1-9) could muster just four hits and Bethune Cookman (4-13) scored in six of eight frames as the Wildcats defeated the Hawks 8-2 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Crimson and Gray struck first, scoring in the top of the first, but BCC added runs in the second and fourth and two in the fifth to go on top 4-1. SJU added another run in the sixth to make it a 4-2 game, but Bethune answered in the home half of the sixth and added a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for insurance.
Freshman hurler Jason Hessler (1-1) tossed 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits for SJU and suffered his first collegiate loss. Joel Grimshaw relieved and went the final 1.2 innings. BCC's Rich Rodriguez gained the win with 7.0 solid innings of work.
The two teams continue their three game series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
