ST. LOUIS - Kyle Mullen turned in another strong outing, striking out eight as the Saint Joseph's baseball team opened up an early lead and held it for a 5-3 win over Saint Louis at the Billiken Sports Center on Friday night. Kevin Taylor was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Brian O'Keefe added a pair of runs batted in for the second straight night.
Saint Joseph's (11-20 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) posted a three-spot in the first, opening the scoring on a one-out single by Taylor that scored Lansing Veeder before O'Keefe ripped a double to left center to plate Taylor and Greg Kumpel.
Taylor made it 4-0 in the fifth with a single down the right field line that brought home Kevin Kratochwill, who led off the frame with a single of his own.
The lead swelled to five when Ryan Pater came in to score on a throwing error with one out in the sixth.
Saint Louis (21-9 overall, 5-3 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Grant Nelson led off with a triple and Mike Vigliarolo followed up with a single. He would come around to score two batters later on a base hit by Jon Corbitt.
The Billikens got within two in the ninth, cutting the score to 5-3 on a two-out single by Connor Gandossy, but Kevin Burum induced a fly ball from Mike Levine to secure the win.
Mullen retired the first 11 hitters of the game and 19 of the first 22, finishing with eight outstanding innings. He allowed two runs on six hits, fanning eight while not walking a batter. Burum allowed one run in the ninth but notched his second save of the season.
Taylor finished with three of SJU's 10 hits on the night, while he and O'Keefe tallied two runs batted in apiece.
The teams will play the series finale on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
