AMBLER, PA - In a classic pitcher's duel, Temple's Arshwin Asjes edged Saint Joseph's Jason Hessler, as the Owls (6-13, 1-1 A-10) clipped the Hawks (8-17, 1-1 A-10), 2-0, in Atlantic 10 action at Ambler Field. Jeremy Jakubowski had three hits for the Crimson and Gray, while Matt Godusky added a pair of knocks.
After five innings, it didn't look like either team was going to score as Asjes battled with Hessler. The Hawk sophomore struck out seven in seven innings and allowed just one earned run, but suffered the loss to drop to 2-5 on the season.
Temple finally broke the deadlock getting on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Owls singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground out. A double down the left-field line to put TU up, 1-0.
The Cherry and White added an insurance run in the eighth off SJU reliever Mark Imbo.
SJU had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Asjes induced a double-play groundball to end the game.
Asjes (3-1) extended his scoreless inning streak to 26 with the complete-game shutout. The right-hander has not allowed a run since February 26. He scattered six hits and struck out four batters.
The series wraps up on Sunday at Ambler Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
