PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's University announced its 2006-07 men's basketball schedule, which has the Hawks taking on nine teams that reached post-season play last year. Saint Joseph's will play 11 regular-season home games this year in the sold-out Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
Head coach Phil Martelli, now in his 12th season with the Hawks, will lead his squad against 2006 NCAA Tournament teams Bucknell, George Washington, Penn, Villanova, and Xavier, as well as Charlotte, Hofstra, Penn State and Temple, teams which reached the 2006 NIT.
SJU will make three national television appearances this year on ESPN2 and CSTV, with the complete regional television schedule still to be announced.
Highlighting the slate is the team's fourth consecutive trip to Madison Square Garden, with participation in this year's Holiday Festival on December 28 and 29. The first round pits SJU against Hofstra, setting up a rematch from last year's NIT Second Round. In the second game, Saint Joseph's will face either St. John's or Boston University.
Saint Joseph's will also participate in the NABC Classic at Louisville on December 8-10, featuring the host Cardinals, Ohio University and a team to be announced. The tournament format will have each team playing three games on consecutive days.
The Hawks tip off the 2006-07 season at home, hosting Fairfield on November 14. Other non-conference games at the Fieldhouse include Bucknell on November 19, Boston University on November 27 and Saint Mary's on December 19.
"I'm looking forward to the A-10 schedule. The league has made even a greater leap in the level of talent, level of commitment to the non-conference schedule and the level of coaching. When you look at the conference schedule, the challenges get the juices flowing as you read the schedule and can already envision how the games will play out," said Martelli.
"We always set up our non-conference schedule to prepare us for conference play and that's no different this year. We'll be home in the Fieldhouse more in November and December, which will play to the passion of our fans and our loyal student body. They'll get the chance to watch this team grow before their eyes," said the coach.
The Hawks have four city games set for the Palestra, their "home away from home". SJU will face Drexel on December 2, Penn on January 27, La Salle on February 10 and Temple on February 22, which will be televised nationally on CSTV.
This year's Saint Joseph's-Villanova game will be played at The Pavilion on Tuesday, February 6 and will be televised on ESPN2 as part of the network's "Rivalry Week".
SJU opens the Atlantic 10 schedule at home on January 3 with a visit from Duquesne. This year, Saint Joseph's will play home and away games with A-10 champion George Washington, Temple and Xavier. The Hawks will host Rhode Island, Dayton, Massachusetts, and Saint Louis, in an ESPN2 telecast. SJU will go on the road to meet Charlotte, Fordham, Richmond and St. Bonaventure.
The 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship will take on a new look this year as the tournament moves to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, March 7 through 10.
Saint Joseph's game times will be announced at a later date.
