PHILADELPHIA (03/01/01) - - St. Joseph's (1-4) plated nine runs in the first inning and cruised to a 13-5 victory over Drexel (0-4) in a non-league game at Drexel Field. Four Hawk pitchers combined to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning before the Dragons broke up the gem. Hawk pitchers held the Dragons hitless until freshman Steve DeMarco led off the ninth inning with an infield single off of Doug Sieger. Senior lefthander Eric Wyatt no-hit the Dragons for six innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out 10. Senior Ryan Woods and freshman Eric Vardijan tossed one inning on no-hit ball apiece for the Crimson and Gray. St. Joseph's needed just three hits during their first-inning outburst as Dragon sophomore righthander Kevin Kulick conceded four walks and a hit a batter. Wyatt helped his own cause with a double and two RBI at the plate. Senior infielder Tim Gunn went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Hawks. Freshman outfielder Pat McCabe, senior outfielder Renaldo Smith and junior outfielder Mike Francis had run-scoring singles for the Dragons in the ninth inning after DeMarco broke up the no-hitter. SJU departs for its annual trip to Florida on Friday. The Hawks open the week with five consecutive games against nationally-ranked opponents, playing a three-game set with Central Florida in Orlando over the weekend and back-to-back games with Florida State in Tallahassee early next week.
