PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore outfielder Ben Wendle and freshman righthander Pat Monaghan have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The honor, voted on by area head coaches, is Wendle's second of the season, and the first for Monaghan. Wendle was previously chosen as the Player of the Week on April 16. It is the fourth time this season two players from one school have swept both awards.

Wendle hit .474 (9-for-19) last week, hitting safely in all four SJU games. His solo home run in the first inning on Tuesday gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead on their way to a 12-1 victory at Rider. Wendle finished the game with four hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs. He also had a big day on Sunday afternoon as the Hawks tried valiantly to come back from seven down against Richmond. Wendle's titanic three-run home run in the fifth inning got SJU back within four, but the Hawks eventually fell, 7-6. He finished the game with three hits, a run scored, and three RBIs. For the week, Wendle had two home runs and six RBIs.

Monaghan started the game at Rider, working 3.1 innings and giving up just one run, but did not figure in the decision. On Sunday, however, he entered in relief in the third inning and allowed just one run in 6.1 innings. Monaghan scattered four hits and walked just one batter while striking out nine. He struck out the side in both the fifth and sixth innings, and fanned five consecutive hitters at one point. For the week, he totaled 9.2 innings and surrendered two runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out 11.

The Hawks will conclude the 2007 season this week when they host the Rhode Island Rams in a three-game series at Latshaw McCarthy Field. First pitch of game one is Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
