PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's baseball team was eliminated from the 2007 Liberty Bell Classic on Tuesday when the Hawks fell to the University of Pennsylvania by a score of 11-5 at Penn's Meiklejohn Stadium. SJU was once again unable to hold on to an early lead, and the Quakers put the game out of reach with a four-run eighth inning. Hawk junior Jeremy Jakubowski reached a career milestone in the fifth inning, as he recorded his 100th career hit on a single to left field.

Saint Joseph's (3-16) got on the board in the first inning for the third straight game thanks to sophomore Ben Wendle. Wendle's third homerun of the season, a three-run shot, put the Hawks on top in the opening frame. The Quakers got a run in the bottom of the inning, but SJU put a fourth tally on the scoreboard in the second as freshman Dewey Oriente scored on an error.

After that, things went south for the Hawks. Penn (7-10) scored one in the second and two in the fourth to draw even, and then added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. The door was effectively slammed shut in the bottom of the eighth when the Quakers touched up freshman Quentin Farr for four runs in his collegiate debut. Jakubowski added an RBI single in the ninth to set the final margin.

In addition to his milestone hit, Jakubowski led the Hawks with a 3-for-5, one RBI performance on the afternoon. Wendle was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while junior Chris Hildreth went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

On the mound, freshman Mark Dolaghan started for the Hawks, surrendering four runs in two-and-a-third innings. Junior Don Werner took the loss for SJU. Werner fell to 0-1 despite giving up just one run on one hit in his two innings of work.

SJU returns to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon. Saint Joseph's will host the Rider Broncs in its home opener at Latshaw-McCarthy field in Norristown, PA. Game time is 3:00 PM.
