UMES STUNS SJU IN BATTLE BETWEEN HAWKS

BOXSCORE2 PRINCESS ANNE, MD (4/21/03) - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (4-23, 1-7 MEAC) swept Saint Joseph's(12-22) by scores of 8-7 and 12-6 at Hawk's Stadium. UMES broke on top early by dentical 4-0 scores in both games and then with stood late rallies by St. Joe's. In the opener, UMES plated four runs in the second inning, three unearned, to go up 4-0. SJU got two back in the third inning and added four in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Down by a pair,UMES did not give up. They put up three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to take a 8-6 lead. St. Joe's made it a one run game on an RBI single by freshman Greg Mason in the seventh and had runners at the corners but could not push across the tying runs. In game two, UMES again jumped out to a 4-0 lead, this time in the opening frame. UMES got one more in the fourth to make it 5-0. The Crimson and Gray trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the fourth on a two-run home run by freshman Ryan Stadanlick. Eastern Shore bolstered their advantage with a single run in the home half of the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to go on top 12-2. Saint Joseph's added four runs in the seventh inning when junior Bill McCollum plated two on a double to right field. Mike Walls singled and managed to move to second on a fielding error by the left fielder, which allowed McCollum to score. A John Kokol single plated Walls, but that would end the scoring for Saint Joseph's. Walls went 2-4 with four RBI in game one. Stadanlick was 3-3 with the round tripper in the second game. SJU travels to Lafayette on Tueday afternoon and hosts Villanova on Wednesday evening at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.
