West reached the milestone on his 11th point of the game with a layup at the 9:31 mark. He finished the game with 22 points and seven rebounds on 9-for-13 shooting. Nelson, who only missed four shots on the day, scored 20 points and handed out five assists. Chet Stachitas added 10 points off the bench and Dwayne Jones had eight points and six rebounds for the Hawks who are now 20-0, 9-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 3-0 in the Big 5.
The Explorers gave the Hawks one of their closer games in the first half, owning a lead in the early going. The Hawks took a 19-19 tie and went on a 13-2 run to break open the game, leading 32-21. A four-point play by Pat Carroll with three seconds remaining gave SJU a 46-32 hafltime lead.
SJU came out of the lockerroom at halftime and put together a 14-5 run in the first seven minutes to take a 62-37 lead. The Hawks' smothering defense kept the Explorers in check, limiting the visitors to 31.8 percent shooting. Saint Joseph's coasted the rest of the way, taking its biggest lead, 73-43, with 9:10 to play.
The Hawks remain one of two unbeaten teams in the nation as Stanford defeated Arizona at the buzzer today.
Saint Joseph's has a showdown with Atlantic 10 West Division leader Dayton on Wednesday, February 11 at the sold-out Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Game time is 7 p.m. for the contest which will be seen locally on CN8.
