NORRISTOWN, PA - Brilliant starting pitching, timely hitting and flawless defense paved the way for Saint Joseph's (7-19, 3-2 A-10) to sweep an Atlantic 10 Conference baseball doubleheader from La Salle (10-17, 4-4 A-10) at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. FReshman Jason Hessler tossed a complete game in the opener as SJU won 7-1 and Ryan Hoagey pitched into the seventh in th esecond game as the Hawks won on a walk-off single by Kevin Walsh to give SJU a 1-0 win.
Hessler (2-3) sparkled in the opener scattering seven hits in picking up the complete game victory. He allowed just one run and walked two, while striking out five. SJU jumped on top early plating three runs in the bottom of the first. La Salle answered with a run in the fifth, but the Hawks responded with three more runs in the home half of the fram and added insurance in the sixth to pickup the 7-1 win.
In the second game Hoagey and La Salle's Jerrod RInger locked up in a dandy. Hoagey tossed 6.1 innings of shutout ball and struckout seven, before Jeff Williams (2-2) came in to get the final two outs of the seventh and earn the win in relief. Ringer (2-3) went the distance and had allowed just one hit untol the bottom ot eh seventh.
Jeremy Jakuboski led off the seventh with a single and them moved to second on a sacrifice. Kevin Walsh then singled to plate the winning run.
The 1-0 shutout was SJU's first since 1999. The team had not posted an A-10 doubleheader sweep since taking two from St. Bonaventure in 2003.
The teams conclude their three game series on Sunday with a single nine innin ggame at noon.
