PHILADELPHIA (03/09/03) - Saint Joseph's junior guard Jameer Nelson picked up his fourth Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week award this week, sharing the honor with Xavier's David West. Nelson, who set a new Hawk record for A-10 Player of the Week honors in a season, also was named to the CollegeInsider.com's 16-man All-America squad. West was the only other A-10 Player honored on the squad. For the week, Nelson averaged 30.5 points, eight rebounds and 3.5 steals as SJU split a pair of games. Against #11 Xavier on Wednesday at the Fieldhouse, the All-America candidate tallied 33 points to lead all scorers in the 88-80 heartbreaking overtime defeat. At UMass on Saturday, he scored 28 points and grabbed a career high 12 rebounds to lead SJU to a 52-49 win. Nelson passed former Hawks Bob Lojewski (1982-83), Maurice Martin (1985-86) and Marvin O'Connor (2000-01), who had each garnered three A-10 Player of the Week honors. He is now tied with Lojewski for most A-10 Player of the Week honors (5) for a career. He owns a SJU record six A-10 Rookie of the Week citations.
