PHILADELPHIA (3/27/03) - The Saint Joseph's baseball team rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Drexel 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium. With the win the Hawks improved to 3-13, while the Dragons slipped to 4-13. St. Joe's will take on Delaware in the semifinals on Tuesday April 1 at 7:00 PM. Trailing 2-1 going in to the eighth, SJU plated four runs with the help of just one hit and two Drexel errors. St. Joe's opened the frame by sandwiching a pair of walks around a strikeout. The Hawks tied the game on a fielder's choice, as Drexel's second baseman mishandled the ball at second. The Hawks went ahead 3-2 on another fielder's choice and added two more runs on an RBI infield single by Nick Baldasari. The throw to first in an attempt to get Baldasari went in the dirt and allowed the fifth run to score. Both teams plated single runs in the fourth. The Hawks picked up their run on a solo homer by senior John Kokol, while Drexel scored on a sacrifice fly to keep the game knotted. Drexel took the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Steve Johnson. Sophomore Ryan Hoagey (1-1) threw the final 2.2 innings to earn the win in releif. DU's James Langley (0-2) suffered the loss. Neither of the game's starters earned a decision, but SJU's Al Braun tossed 6.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits. Drexel's Brett Hraban, meanwhile gave up just one run and one hit over 7.0 innings.
