NORRISTOWN, PA - The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped its conference home opener on Friday afternoon to the Dayton Flyers by the score of 6-3. Freshman Drew Smith led SJU with two hits on the afternoon.
Dayton (9-14, 1-3 Atlantic 10) started the scoring in the top of the first. The Flyers had their first two hitters reach base and scored the game's first run on a double play grounder to second. A double to the gap in left-center scored the second run. The Flyers added a third tally in the fourth inning on a wild pitch by Hawk starter Adam Rivera.
Saint Joseph's (3-18, 1-3 Atlantic 10) pulled even in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore outfielder Ben Wendle hit a bases-loaded single which, combined with an error on the centerfielder, cleared the bases. The Flyers jumped back on top with a three-spot in the top of the sixth on two hit batters and two RBI singles.
Dayton starter Chris Rubio (3-4) pitched six solid innings for the win. Rivera took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. Alex Dye worked three scoreless innings to record his first save.
The teams return to Latshaw-McCarthy Field for game two of the series on Saturday afternoon. Game time is 1:00 PM.
