PHILADELPHIA, PA (11/6/03)- The Saint Joseph's backcourt of Jameer Nelson (Chester, Pa.) and Delonte West (Greenbelt, Md.) has been named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference First Team, while junior Pat Carroll (Horsham, Pa.) is a Third-Team honoree. The selections were voted on by the league's coaches and media and announced at the conference's annual media day. Nelson and sophomore Dwayne Jones (Chester, Pa.) were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team. The Hawks are a unanimous selection to finish first in the Atlantic 10 East, gaining all 34 first-place votes, with Temple picked second. Xavier was chosen first in the West Division with Dayton second, although both received the same amount of first-place votes. Nelson and West were joined on the first team by Marques Green (St. Bonaventure), Romain Sato (Xavier) and Keith Waleskowski (Dayton). The second team was comprised of Tony Dobbins (Rhode Island), David Hawkins (Temple), Gary Neal (La Salle), Ramond Marshall (Dayton), and Brian Woodward (Rhode Island). Carroll was joined on the third team by Anthony Anderson (Massachusetts), Lionel Chambers (Xavier), Michael Haynes (Fordham), Anthony Myles (Xavier) and Steven Smith (La Salle). In addition to the Hawks' Nelson and Jones, the Defensive Team was comprised of Dobbins, Green and Sato. The Hawks, ranked 18th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, open the season in a week (Nov. 14) against #12 Gonzaga in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden. Game time is 9 p.m. for the nationally-televised contest (ESPN2).
