Baseball Adds Four Student-Athletes to Class of 2014

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's head baseball coach Fritz Hamburg has announced that four student-athletes have joined the SJU baseball program in time for the 2011 season.

Incoming freshmen Matt Buccheri, Chris Hueth, Steven Schuler, and Cody Silverman will join SJU's nine early signings for the upcoming year.

A native of Little Silver, N.J., and a graduate of Red Bank Regional High School, lefthanded pitcher Matt Buccheri was named to the All-Division Team by the Asbury Park Press. As a senior he posted a 5-4 record with a 2.50 earned run average in leading his team to the state sectional semifinals for the second straight season. He also struck out 48 batters in 60 innings while posting a .402 batting average and stealing 19 bases. Buccheri was also a member of Red Bank Regional's 2009 state sectional finalist.

Chris Hueth hails from Spring Lake, N.J., and was named the 2010 Athlete of the Year at St. Rose High School. He is a three-time Star-Ledger All-Shore honoree, including Second Team accolades as a senior. The outfielder was also chosen for the All-Monmouth County First Team as St. Rose won the Non-Public Group B Central Division championship. Hueth notched a .521 average with two home runs, 34 runs scored, 24 runs batted in, and 11 doubles in 2010. He also played for the Jersey Shore Carpenter Cup squad for three years.

Steven Schuler comes to Hawk Hill from Pitman High School in Pitman, N.J. On the mound, the southpaw had a sparkling 10-1 record as a senior, fanning 109 hitters in 66 innings on his way to a 1.27 ERA. At the plate, Schuler notched a .413 average and scored 30 runs. He twirled a complete game shutout in the state championship game, striking out 13 against just two walks to lead Pitman to a 5-0 victory and the title. Schuler was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer All-South Jersey First Team and to the Star-Ledger Group 1 All-State Team, as well as the Tri-County All-Conference squad.

Catcher Cody Silverman, a native of Middlesex, N.J., was a member of Immaculata High School's Non-Public Group A state championship squad. As a senior, he hit .438 with four home runs, 27 RBI and an impressive .800 slugging percentage. Silverman was named First Team All-Somerset County and First Team All-Skyland Conference in addition to Third Team All-Non Public and Third Team All-Area honors.
