NEW YORK, NY(11/14/03) - The 17th-ranked Saint Joseph's men's basketball team tips off the highly-anticipated 2003-04 season this evening against #10 Gonzaga in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is approximately 9:20 p.m. for the game which will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Close to 4,000 Hawk fans, including over 1,300 students, will descend upon Madison Square Garden, many of them busing from Philadelphia. Saint Joseph's set the ticket sales record for one school at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, eclipsing the marks held by Connecticut (3,200) and Duke. The game will also be broadcast on WPEN Radio (950 AM) as the Saint Joseph's Sports Network team of Tom McCarthy and Joe Lunardi call the action. Preseason All-America Jameer Nelson leads the Hawks into the contest against the Bulldogs. The Saint Joseph's- Gonzaga series has had two exciting games in its history. Gonzaga won in Philadelphia two years ago on New Years Eve as Dan Dickau hit a three-pointer in the final seconds. In Spokane, Wash. last year, Jameer Nelson scored 32 points and had the game-winning shot in overtime to help the Hawks break Gonzaga's 29-game home winning streak. Pittsburgh and Alabama tip off the night's action at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
