CHARLOTTE, NC - The Saint Joseph's baseball team suffered a 9-0 defeat at the hands of the Charlotte 49ers on Thursday night at Charlotte's Hayes Stadium. 49er hurler Adam Mills pitched a two-hit complete game shutout to improve to 8-1 on the season for Charlotte. SJU's Adam Rivera took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the year.
The contest was scoreless until the fifth inning before Charlotte (24-5, 6-1 Atlantic 10) got on the board by scoring five runs and chased Rivera from the game. Two singles, a sacrifice fly, two doubles, and a two-run homerun by junior outfielder Brad McElroy spelled the end of Rivera's evening after four and two-thirds innings. He surrendered five runs on eight hits, striking out three. Junior Andrew Powers gave up four runs on three hits, including McElroy's second homerun of the game, a solo shot in the seventh.
Mills was nearly perfect, holding Saint Joseph's (4-21, 2-5 Atlantic 10) without a hit until the top of the seventh inning. He struck out 14 Hawk batters, with one walk and one hit batsman. Freshman David Valesente's single in the seventh broke up the no-hit bid, and junior Kenny Pustizzi added a single in the eighth to record the only other base hit for the Hawks.
The teams will continue the series Friday at 6:00 PM at Hayes Stadium. Freshman lefthander Randall Mower (2-1, 4.94 ERA) will take the hill for the Hawks, opposing senior lefty Spencer Steedley.
