NORRISTOWN, PA - Despite hanging close early, Saint Joseph's (4-15) saw Villanova (10-4-1) break open a 3-2 ball game in the sixth inning and coast to a 14-6 victory in the opening round of the 2005 Liberty Bell Classic at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Junior Greg Mason and sophomore Kevin Walsh each homered for the Hawks.
Hawk starter Jeff Williams (1-1) was shaky early as the Wildcats plated a couple of runs in the top of the first inning on four hits. He settled in, however, and limited VU to just three runs in five innings of work. He walked one and struckout two.
The Hawk offense helped Williams out, twice trimming the Villanova lead to a single run. In the fourth, Walsh walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single bby Nick Baldasari to make it a 2-1 ball game.
VU added a run in the fifth on a double, sacrifice bunt and RBI single. SJU then answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame.
Wildcat bats came alive in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off Hawk reliever Al Braun to make it 6-2. A solo home run by Walsh to straight-away center sliced the lead to 6-3.
A six run seventh broke the game open. They then added two more tallies in the eighth to push the lead to 14-6. The Crimson and Gray closed out the scoring when Mason drilled a three-run homer to leftcenter field.
Williams was the tough-luck loser for SJU. Kevin Mulvey (1-0), working on a pitch count, tossed three innings of one hit ball and struckout four to collect the win.
Jeremy Hunt was 4-4 with three runs scored for VIllanova. Derek Shunk was 3-4 with two runs and three RBI.
