PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's has announced its 2008-09 men's basketball schedule, which includes participation in the 2008 EA Sports Maui Invitational, and 14 home games to be played at The Palestra. Click here for schedule.
All of the Hawks' home games this year will be played at the historic Palestra, due to the renovation and expansion project of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
Saint Joseph's opens the season against Rider at the Palestra on November 14 and then goes on the road to face Holy Cross on November 16.
The Hawks then make their first-ever visit to the EA Sports Maui Invitational, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2008. SJU will play in the tournament's first game on November 24 against Texas, which reached the 2007 NCAA Elite Eight. The tournament runs through November 26, with the field also including Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oregon and host Chaminade.
Upon return from Hawaii, the Hawks will play non-conference games at home against Creighton (Dec. 6), Cornell (Dec. 22), Siena (Dec. 28), city rival Drexel on New Year's Eve and Big 5 foe Penn (Jan. 24). SJU will visit Lehigh (Dec. 2), Towson (Dec. 9), Big 5 rival Villanova (Dec. 11), and Ball State (Jan. 3).
This season's Atlantic 10 schedule has the Hawks facing UMass, St. Bonaventure and Temple twice each.
The conference slate opens on January 10 with SJU hosting Rhode Island. Other league home games are with Charlotte (Jan. 18), Duquesne (Jan. 21), George Washington (Feb. 4), Temple (Feb. 12), Massachusetts (Feb. 22), Xavier (Feb. 26) and St. Bonaventure (March 1).
SJU will go on the road for league play beginning on January 14 at St. Bonaventure. That will be followed by games at Richmond (Jan. 28), at Dayton (Feb. 1), at Massachusetts (Feb. 8), and versus La Salle at The Palestra (Feb. 14). The Hawks will travel to Saint Louis on February 18 and close out the regular season with road games at Temple (March 5) and Fordham (March 7).
For the third consecutive year, the Atlantic 10 Championship will be held at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, and will run from March 11 through 14.
