NATIONALLY-RANKED RICHMOND TAKES TWO FROM SAINT JOSEPH'S

NORRISTOWN, PA (04/06/02) - The nationally-ranked University of Richmond baseball team swept Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader at Elmwood Park's Latshaw-McCarthy Field. The Spiders won the first game 10-2 and then took the second 11-5. UR improved to 26-3 overall, 8-0 in the Atlantic 10, while SJU fell to 4-24-1, 1-7 in the A-10. Senior Justin Godusky went 3-7 in the twin-bill with a double, triple and a couple of RBI for SJU. Richmond jumped out to q 10-0 lead in game one, before SJU scratched back with a couple of runs late to fall 10-2. Sophomore Tim Stauffer tossed a complete game, striking out seven, to improve to 10-0 on the season. SJU sophomore Erik Vardijan hurled four innings for SJU and took the loss to fall to 0-3. Freshman Ryan Hoagey pitched a scoreless final three innings for the Hawks. Sophomore Chris Dolan went 4-5 with a triple a home run and four RBI for Richmond. Junior David Reaver and freshman Jim Fasano added three hits each for Richmond. Freshman Brian Anecharico went 2-2 with a double for SJU. Game two featured a nip-and-tuck battle, until a four-run seventh inning broke open the game for Richmond and helped the Spiders to an 11-5 win. UR broke on top 2-0 in the first inning, but SJU trimmed the lead to 2-1, when Kevin Dougher scored on a triple by Godusky. Each team pushed across a single run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth. Richmond then added two more runs in the sixth, while Dougher scored another run for SJU in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Tim Rice started for UR and went 3.2, allowing two runs and received a no-decision. Sophomore Matt McLoughlinrelieved and pitched the final 3.1 innings to improve to 3-0. Sophomore Bill McCollum gave the Hawks a gutty 6.0 inning effort, but suffered the defeat and now stands at 1-3. The Hawks and Spiders will wrap up their three-game series at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
