HAWKS HANG TOUGH BUT FALL TO CHARLOTTE, 5-2

CHARLOTTE, NC (03/14/02) - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team behind the pitching of Justin Brown defeated Saint Joseph's, 5-2, in the final game of their two-game series. Charlotte improved their record to 9-8 with their fifth straight win, wile SJU fell to 1-11-1 with their fifth straight defeat. Brown recorded his first career complete game as he scattered seven hits and limited SJU to two runs with four strikeouts for his second win of the season. The Hawks, meanwhile, received a strong outing from sophomore Eric Vardijan. Vardijan (0-1) threw five solid innings giving up just five hits and three earned runs. Charlotte jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a couple runs on two hits in the first inning. Thomas Bowker scored the game's first run on George Sandel's single to center field. Then, Sandel scored the other run on Joey Bradshaw's double off the center field wall. Saint Joseph's tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning when Bill McCollum connected on a double to right field that scored Jason Tarewicz and Pace Bradshaw. Charlotte regained the lead for good, 4-2, with two runs in the third inning. The 49ers scored their final run to make the score, 5-2, with a single to right field in the sixth inning. SJU will kick off a three-game series in Raleigh, N.C. against North Carolina State on Friday.
