NORRISTOWN, Pa. (04/05/01) - Senior Tom Gibson two-run home run broke open a one-run ball game and keyed a five run eighth inning that carried St. Joseph's (8-13-1) to a 9-5 win over Wilmington College (14-4-1). Fellow senior's Mike DeVincentis and Kevin Kirkby had three RBI apiece for the winners. Gibson's round-tripper provided separation, but DeVincentis and Kirkby added even more insurance in the eighth inning after WC had trimmed the Hawk advantage to just 4-3 in the top half of the frame. Pace Bradshaw led off the bottom of the eighth with a single for SJU, then Gibson crushed a homer off the light pole in left center. Jason Tarewicz and Rich Caloiero then reached on a pair of Wildcat errors. After Tarewicz was caught stealing, Justin Godusky walked. A double by Kirkby plated Caloiero and a single by DeVincnetis tacked on two more runs. On the mound three seniors combined to to scatter eight hits for SJU. Doug Sieger got the start and pitched well. He struckout four and walked none, allowing only two runs in 7.0 quality innings. Don Peterson and Ryan Woods each pitched an inning to close out the ball game and neither allowed an earned run. Sieger earned the win to even his record at 1-1 for the season. Seven of the nine Hawk starters collected at least one hit. Leading the way were Kirkby, DeVincentis, Bradshaw and Godusky, who all had two hits each. Eric Wyatt and Caloiero each scored a pair of runs from the leadoff spot. Wyatt also smoked a double to push his hitting streak to 11 games. SJU resumes Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend, as the Hawks host Xavier at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Action both days begins at noon.
