PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's basketball player D.J. Rivera will not participate in competition for the first semester in order to concentrate on academics, it was announced by head coach Phil Martelli.
The sophomore can practice with the team this semester, although his practice schedule will be determined by Martelli and Rivera's academic tutors.
"It is in D.J.'s best interest that he focus on his academic schedule this semester," said Martelli.
A 6-2 guard from Philadelphia (Neumann-Goretti H.S.), Rivera played in all 32 games last season as one of the first players off the bench. He averaged 5.9 points and a team-high 1.3 steals per game.
The Hawks begin practice for the 2007-08 season on Saturday morning. Saint Joseph's opens the year in the NIT Season Tip-Off, traveling to Syracuse to play Fairleigh Dickinson on November 12.
