NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Saint Joseph's closed out the home portion of its 2008 baseball schedule on Tuesday afternoon with a 13-4 defeat against NJIT. Evan Spano had three hits, a run scored, and an RBI, and Jereme Scott added a hit and an RBI of his own.
NJIT (4-41) started off the game by touching up SJU starter Andrew Powers for three quick runs in the first. The Highlanders scored on three hits and a hit batsman.
Saint Joseph's (17-32) scored twice in the second and once in the third to equalize. In the second, Ben Wendle was hit by a pitch and Dewey Oriente drew a one-out walk. Wendle came around to score on a single by Scott, and a single by catcher Spano plated Oriente.
In the third, Joe Cook drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a successful double steal to tie the game.
The Highlanders scored twice in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Ricky Petrosino and Miguel Lugo.
NJIT effectively sealed the win with an eight-spot in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a three-run double from pinch hitter P.J. Saporito.
In the ninth, Spano singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Cook to close the scoring.
SJU will close its season this weekend with a series at crosstown rival La Salle. The teams will meet Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field.
