PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior Chad Simendinger was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday morning. The award, given for the week of May 3-9, is voted on by the head coaches and sports information offices of the Philadelphia area's five Division I baseball-playing universities.
Simendinger got the starting nod against Fordham at Campbell's Field on Sunday night and, in a crucial Atlantic 10 game, notched his best performance of the season, pitching into the eighth inning of SJU's 5-4 win over the Rams that kept the Hawks in a tie for second place in the conference standings.
The righthander worked seven and a third spectacular innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He also struck out eight and retired nine of 10 hitters in the middle. Simendinger kept the Rams off the scoreboard until the eighth, when the last batter he faced hit an RBI single.
The victory was the 13th for the Hawks in conference play this season, breaking the school record of 12 set in 1995. Saint Joseph's is currently in a tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 and seeking its first Atlantic 10 Championship berth.
SJU returns to action for its final four road games of the season this week. On Wednesday, the Hawks will face off with rival Villanova in Plymouth Township, Pa. First pitch is set for 3:15 p.m. Saint Joseph's will then open up a critical three-game Atlantic 10 set at Dayton on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
