CINCINNATI, Ohio - A two-out rally by the Saint Joseph's baseball team came up just short as SJU fell by a 4-3 score to Xavier on Sunday. The Musketeers claimed the rubber game of the series after starter Danny Rosenbaum got all but the final out of the game in 8.2 strong innings.
Xavier (16-20, 10-5 Atlantic 10) took a quick 2-0 lead with single tallies in both the first and second innings. An RBI groundout by Bobby Freking scored Drew Schmidt with the first run of the game, while a Phil Bauer triple plated Sean Farrell and put the Musketeers ahead by two.
Saint Joseph's (14-23, 6-9 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the fourth inning when David Valesente hit an RBI single to drive in Jeremy Jakubowski. Xavier responded in the bottom of the frame, however, on an RBI double by Adam Posono.
The Hawks got back within one in the sixth when Jakubowski took Rosenbaum deep for his team-leading fourth home run of the season. Once again, however, XU scored in the bottom of the inning on a single by Posono to push the lead to 4-2.
The score remained at 4-2 until the top of the ninth. After Rosenbaum retired the first two hitters, Ben Wendle reached on an error by shortstop Jordan Conley. Conley, who doubles as Xavier's closer, then moved to the mound to try and get the final out. Pinch hitter Ryan McDonald singled, allowing pinch runner Tim Smith to advance to second. A single by Kenny Pustizzi scored Smith and left runners at the corners with two outs, but Conley retired pinch hitter Mike Boyland on strikes to end the game.
Rosenbaum got the win, improving to 2-3 on the season, while Don Werner took the loss for SJU to fall to 2-4. Conley notched his eighth save of the season with his one-third of an inning.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark in Plymouth Township, Pa. with a 3:15 game against the Wildcats.
