PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's basketball coach Phil Martelli and his staff will be among the coaches nationwide wearing sneakers at Saturday's game versus George Washington as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Sneaker Event.
Martelli is one of 10 coaches who will auction off his sneakers, which will be autographed, with the proceeds going to Coaches vs. Cancer. Fans can bid on the sneakers by going to the ACS website.
This event strives to increase awareness of the joint effort of the National Basketball Coaches Association and the American Cancer Society is undertaking to fight the disease. Coaches are encouraged to wear white sneakers in their games this weekend.
Martelli is one of the key players in the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer Group in which the head coaches of the city's six schools have joined together. Last year, the Philadelphia group raised $500,000 and has set a goal of $1 million for the coming year. The group was honored at the 2004 NCAA Final Four with the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award from the NABC as well as the Community Service Award from the Philadelphia Sports Congress.
Other upcoming Coaches vs. Cancer events are the Tip-Off Breakfast on March 13 at the Palestra and the Basket Ball Gala on April 29 at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia.
