Delaware Holds Off Hawk Comeback, 9-4

NEWARK, DE - A three-run sixth inning brought Saint Joseph's (0-7) within a single run, but Delaware (3-1) responded with four runs in the home half of the frame to hold off SJU at Bob Hannah Stadium, 9-4. Sophomore Mike Blahusch went 3-5 with a home run. Senior Dustin Onulak had three runs batted in.

The Blue Hens jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. UD led off with a single and a double, respectively. Two batters later with the bases loaded and one out, Ryan Jablonski lined a single through the middle to score the game's first two runs.

Saint Joseph's responded in the top of the third when Blahusch led off the inning with a home run to left to cut the Delaware lead in half. In the bottom of the inning, the Hens increased their lead on a two-out single by Brandon Menchaca that plated two runs. Menchaca then doubled in the bottom of the fifth to give the Hens a 5-1 lead.

After striking out two batters in a scoreless fifth inning, pitcher Rob Bergman found himself in a jam in the sixth. He hit leadoff batter Matt Godulsky, followed by two walks, and then allowed a bases-clearing double to Onulak that cut the Delaware lead to 5-4.

The Hens roared back in the bottom half of the inning. Jablonski led off with a triple, followed by a double by designated hitter Scott Shockley. Two batters later, Todd Davison homered to left to put the Hens up 8-4. After an error, the Hen's second triple of the inning to provide the final margin.

UD's Brown allowed one run and struck out four in four innings of work to earn the win for Delaware. Saint Joseph's starter Chris Prescott took the loss for the Hawks.

Evan Bowen and Chad Kerfoot combined for four innings of scoreless relief to finish off the win. Menchaca knocked in three runs on the day while Tsakonas scored three times.
