PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior Pat Calathes was named to the 2008 Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team while junior Ahmad Nivins received third team honors in voting conducted among the conference's head coaches.
Calathes, who was a third team selection in 2007, has been the Hawks' leading scorer and rebounder all year. The 6-10 guard/forward from Casselberry, FL, has posted career-best averages of 17.8 points and 7.7 rebounds, while ranking third in assists and second in blocked shots. Calathes has led the team in scoring in 17 games and in rebounding 19 times.
The senior was also named to the NABC District 3 First Team. The Hawks' top free throw shooter at 82.8 percent, he has seven double-doubles on the season and has recorded 20 points or more 11 times.
Nivins ranks second on the Hawks in scoring and rebounding with his averages of 14.5 points and 5.2 rebounds. The 6-9 junior from Jersey City, NJ, leads the Hawks with his field goal percentage of 65.3. He's hitting a conference-best 64.8 percent of his shots in league games, and owns the SJU career record for field goal percentage with 63.5.
The junior, who was an All-A-10 First Team selection in 2007, was also named to the NABC All-District 3 Third Team this season. He's led the squad in scoring in 10 games and in rebounding seven.
Both Calathes and Nivins reached the 1,000-career point mark this season and are two of 26 players in Hawk history to notch over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Saint Joseph's (18-11) has earned the fifth seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Championship and will take on 12th-seeded Fordham on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
