PHILADELPHIA (5/01/03) - Saint Joseph's University senior baseball standout Mike Walls has been named the NovaCare Athlete of the Month for April. A native of Hockessein, Del., Walls batted .357 with three home runs and 22 RBI, while hitting safely in 19 of SJU's 23 games at the plate. He was also 1-0 with two saves and a 1.50 ERA in five appearances on the hill during the month. Walls was named the A-10 Athlete of the Week on April 28 after a spectacular week in which he hit safely in all seven games for the Hawks, collecting 10 hits in 26 at-bats (.385). He totaled 10 RBI and six runs scored. The third baseman slammed a two-run homer in the first inning of the Hawks' 11-1 win over St. Bonaventure on Apr. 26 in game one of a doubleheader. On the pitching side, he hurled a perfect seventh inning to record the save in SJU's 11-10 win in game two...also earned a save with a scoreless inning in St. Joe's 8-7 victory over Villanova. For the week Walls allowed one run in five innings pitched out of the bullpen.
