TULANE COMPLETES SWEEP OF SJU IN NEW ORLEANS

NEW ORLEANS (2/09/03) - Saint Joseph's (0-3) jumped on the scoreboard first, but #23 Tulane erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning off St. Joe's starter Erik Vardijan and cruised to a 11-1 victory over the Hawks at Turchin Stadium. The win gave the Wave a sweep of a three-game series against the Hawks in Louisiana. Tulane scored five runs in the first and added one in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to win the game which was stopped after seven innings due to the ten-run rule. The Hawks briefly led in the ball game, scoring in the top of the first inning. Senior Kevin Dougher drove home junior Jason Tarewicz with the lone SJU tally. The Crimson and Gray mustered just three hits against Tulane freshman J.R. Crowel (1-0). Vardijan (0-1) took the loss. The Hawk return to the diamond next weekend, playing a three-game series against Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond.
