DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (3/09/03) - Bethune-Cookman (5-11) used a 10 hit attack and held Saint Joseph's (1-6) to just three base knocks to win the opening game of a rain shortened doubleheader at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The day's second game, postponed from Saturday, was cancelled due to rain. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first off Hawk starter Erik Vardijan. SJU crept within one at 2-1 with a single run in the third inning. Junior Jason Tarewicz walked with one out and stole second base. He then trotted home on an RBI double by senior Mike Walls. BCC added another run in the home half of the third to make it 3-1 and then erupted for four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull away for the victory. Walls had a pair of doubles to account for two of SJU's three hits. Junior Nick Baldasari added the other hit. Vardijan (0-2) tossed 3.1 innings allowing sic earned runs and six hits. Sophomore Ryan Hoagey hurled the final 2.2 innings giving up three runs and four hits. SJU will travel to Tallahassee on Monday. The Hawks will play single games agains the nation's #1 ranked team Florida State on Tuesday and Wednesday.
