Hawk Rally Falls Short Against Rider, 14-10

NORRISTOWN, PA - A seven-run ninth inning rally was not enough to bail out Saint Joseph's (13-33) as the the Hawks dropped a 14-10 decision to Rider (15-27) in non-conference baseball action at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Sophomore Mike Gentile was 3-5 with two runs and two RBI for SJU.

The Broncs took a commanding early lead erupting for nine runs in the top of the second off Hawk starter Joel Grimshaw and reliver Matt Gilbert.

SJU scratched back with a single run in the home half of the second and two more in the third.

Rider added insurance with three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth to build a 14-3 advantage, before the Crimson and Gray mounted a furious comeback, scoring seven times in the bottom of the ninth.

Grimshaw (0-5), the first of eight SJU pitchers on the afternoon suffered the loss after allowing six runs and six hits in one inning plus of work. Rider's Justin Roskowski started and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He was relieved by Evan Garcia (1-1), who gave up four runs and six hits in 3.2 innings to earn his first win.

Besides Gentile, senior Rob Pimpinell and freshman Jereme Scott were each 2-5. Gene Crimoli was 4-5 with three runs and three RBI for Rider, Tom Letizia was 3-6.

The Hawks travel to Fordham this weekend for a three-game Atlantic 10 series.
