Asst. Coach Mike Rice Leaves SJU to Join Staff at Pittsburgh

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's assistant basketball coach Mike Rice has resigned in order to join the coaching staff at the University of Pittsburgh, it was announced by Hawk head coach Phil Martelli.

Rice recently completed his second season on Martelli's staff. A 1991 graduate of Fordham, he came to Saint Joseph's with more than 10 years of experience coaching at Fordham, Marquette, Niagara and Chicago State, while also serving as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp until 2004.

"I'm delighted for Mike and his family. I know that he has developed a deep appreciation and love for Saint Joseph's and Saint Joseph's basketball. We appreciate his efforts. I know that he'll do terrific things at Pitt," said Martelli.

Rice is a native of Pittsburgh and his father, Mike Rice, Sr., was the coach at Duquesne and Youngstown State during his career.

Long-time Hawk assistant Monte Ross left SJU in April to become the head coach at the University of Delaware. Big 5 Hall of Famer and former NBA player Doug Overton recently came to Saint Joseph's, joining former SJU standout Mark Bass on the staff.
