PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Idris Hilliard and Charoy Bentley have been named co-captains of the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team, it was announced by head coach Phil Martelli. The seniors were chosen by a vote of their teammates.
Hilliard, a 6-7 forward from Roselle, N.J. (The Hun School), is the team's leading returning scorer after averaging 10.2 points last year. A starter for the past two seasons, he also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game.
Bentley, a 5-11 guard from West Haven, Conn. (Harding H.S.), has seen action mostly in a reserve role over the past three seasons, playing in 69 career games.
The Hawks officially begin practice on Saturday, October 16, with a 10:30 a.m. workout at Hagan Arena.
Saint Joseph's returns six players from last season, including three starters - Hilliard, Todd O'Brien and Justin Crosgile. Martelli, now in his 16th season, welcomes a highly-touted recruiting class of five freshmen, including C.J. Aiken, the Pennsylvania Player of the Year. Also new to the Hawks is Hofstra transfer Halil Kanacevic, who will sit out this season and then have three years of eligibility at SJU.
SJU opens the season on Friday, November 12, when it hosts Western Kentucky at Hagan Arena.
