EASTON, PA - A single by junior Jeremy Jakubowski was all Saint Joseph's (9-18) could muster falling to Lafayette (7-11) in the opening game of the 2006 Liberty Bell Classic at Class of 1978 Stadium, 3-0.
Leopard sophomore Kevin Reese faced just one over the minimum and struckout six to shutout the Hawks. He retired the first 10 in order before Jakubowski dropped a single into right field and took an extra base on an error. Greg Mason lined out to the second baseman, who flipped the ball to shortstop to double off Jakubowski and get out of the inning.
SJU managed only one baserunner over the final six innings, as Adriano Petrutz led off the seventh with a walk and stole second with one out.
The Lafayette bats started quickly in the first, as the Leopards singled to left and followed with a double to left center to get on the board. The Leopards plated two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Chris Prescott started for the Crimson and Gray and went five innings while allowing all three runs. Don Werner allowed one hit while pitching the sixth and seventh, and Mark Imbo threw a perfect eighth for the Hawks.
